The news: 1872, a Cincinnati startup founded by three former SpaceX engineers, raised a $15 million seed to build and operate its own automated steel-fabrication factory, in one of the largest seed rounds in Ohio history.
What it does: Instead of selling software to fabricators, 1872 is building the plant itself. It pairs AI "physical world" software with automation hardware, including robots from Ohio's Path Robotics, to plan and run heavy steel fabrication end to end with far less manual labor.
The first factory is a working prototype; the company is targeting full factory autonomy by 2027.
Why it matters: Structural-steel fabrication runs on skilled welders, a trade facing a severe and worsening labor shortage that stretches lead times for construction, infrastructure, and equipment makers.
"Our goal is to create a new model and foundation for American manufacturing," CEO Dan Summers said, with software "orchestrating robotics and production operations." For now it is a domestic-capacity model to watch, not a vendor buyers can hire.
