Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com after Meta declined a request to remove it, Bloomberg reported last month. Amazon began blocking the agent on Sept. 20. Shoppers using Muse see a notice saying continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use.
Amazon said Meta had not disclosed that Muse would access its retail site and that the agent did not identify itself as an AI. The company said third-party shopping agents should operate transparently and respect retailers’ decisions about access. Meta countered that Muse has no visibility into users’ passwords or payment methods.
The dispute comes as Meta expands Muse’s shopping capabilities. Shopify enables direct checkout through Meta by default for eligible stores, with Shop Pay available as a payment option. At its Sept. 24 Connect event, Meta announced additional shopping partners including Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora and Wayfair, alongside several apparel and sporting-goods retailers.
Amazon is also challenging Perplexity over its Comet shopping agent. In an amended complaint filed Sept. 21, Amazon alleged that Perplexity’s iOS app copied users’ session cookies to its cloud servers to access Amazon.
Amazon has its own shopping agent, Buy for Me, which purchases products from participating brands’ websites. Brands are enrolled unless they email Amazon to opt out, Modern Retail reported.
