The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin voiding importer-of-record numbers tied to inaccurate or incomplete registration data from September 18. The move is part of enhanced enforcement under an executive order signed in June.
Importers and customs brokers must ensure information on CBP Form 5106 is accurate, complete, and belongs directly to the importer. That includes physical and mailing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and tax identification numbers. Physical addresses cannot be those of registered agents, brokers, freight forwarders or P.O. boxes.
CBP said a voided importer-of-record number will be invalid for entering goods into the US. The agency will notify affected importers and provide instructions for requesting reestablishment. Brokers must also maintain a valid power of attorney with clients.
