Etsy has agreed to buy zero-emission trucking certificates for four years to help fund electric trucks on the Houston-Dallas lane. The marketplace signed the agreement in 2025 through GMA Trucking, a buyers alliance run by the Center for Green Market Activation.
Shipping is “our largest source of emissions at over 60%,” Etsy’s environmental impact lead Sam Brundrett told Supply Chain Dive. Etsy does not operate its own truck fleet, so the certificates let it support freight decarbonization without tying the purchases to its shipments.
The agreement covers a defined volume of zero-emission trucking certificates measured in tonne-kilometers. The certificates represent freight moved by electric trucks rather than diesel vehicles. Buyers claim the associated emissions reductions in their reporting, similar to renewable-energy certificates. An outside auditor verifies the certificates. Etsy’s certificate volume and price have not been disclosed.
The project covers 63 Tesla Semis that will run between Houston and Dallas, with deployment planned for early 2027. Nevoya will operate the trucks and is working with Greenlane on charging infrastructure for the route.
Etsy aims to cut its value-chain emissions per dollar of gross profit 52% by 2030 from a 2020 baseline and reach net zero by 2040. It had an internal climate budget of about $3.5 million in 2025.
Google added 25 trucks to the project last month. Amazon, eBay, Meta and Green Worldwide Shipping joined Etsy in the first round in January. GMA plans a second procurement in 2027 that would pair certificates with electric hauls of members' own freight.
