GlobalFoundries (GF) will build and operate two new 300mm semiconductor fabs at its Malta, N.Y., site under a US-Japan investment initiative backed by up to $21 billion from Japan. About $10 billion will fund the first fab, which is expected to open in 2029. A second investment of about $10 billion would fund the second fab. Each fab would add about 900,000 wafers a year at full output.
GF will manage customer relationships and would like to prioritize US and Japanese customers, CEO Tim Breen told Reuters. Initial customers include Japanese chipmaker Renesas and Apple.
Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata said the New York capacity would extend the company’s own production footprint. The fabs will serve automotive, industrial and connected infrastructure markets.
GF expects to break ground on the first fab later this year. The projects fall under Japan’s $550 billion US investment pledge, made in return for lower US tariffs on Japanese imports.
Separately, GF will redirect $955 million of its existing CHIPS Act award toward silicon photonics, silicon-germanium and advanced packaging at facilities in Malta and Burlington, Vt. Under a separate agreement, Commerce will take an approximately 4% equity stake in GF. The new fabs are expected to create more than 1,000 manufacturing jobs.
