Amazon is investing more than $100 million in an advanced manufacturing plant in Greenwood, Indiana, that is expected to open by 2028. The plant will build equipment for Amazon's fulfillment and robotics network across North America.
The work covers fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating and assembly. The 300 jobs include CNC operators, welders, powder coating technicians, assemblers, and manufacturing, quality and controls engineers. Amazon chose Indiana for its manufacturing workforce, cost structure and logistics infrastructure, per The Robot Report. Amazon has invested over $40 billion in Indiana since 2008 and created more than 27,000 direct jobs there.
Amazon has built more than 1 million robots in the US. They work in more than 300 facilities and help with 75% of the customer orders Amazon delivers worldwide, according to the company.
Amazon has made robots at facilities in Massachusetts since 2021, per Chain Store Age. In August, it announced a multibillion-dollar robotics plant in Austin, Texas, with 300 to 500 manufacturing and engineering jobs. That plant will build robotic systems that handle repetitive tasks and heavy lifting alongside warehouse workers.
Amazon also invested in German humanoid maker NEURA Robotics’ Series C round of up to $1.4 billion in June. It is deploying Agility’s Digit humanoid in its logistics operations. Earlier this year, it acquired RIVR, which makes four-legged doorstep delivery robots, per The Robot Report.
