Dollar General named Travis Nixon as its Chief Data and AI Officer, a newly created role, and gave him responsibility for delivery operations, alongside data and analytics. he notable part is who owns delivery now: a data and AI executive, not a traditional store-operations leader.
The mandate: Nixon’s role goes beyond a typical data leadership position. He will oversee “the discount retailer’s AI strategies and delivery operations, including data engineering and enablement," while continuing to lead business process management efforts that use AI to improve efficiency across merchandising, supply chain, and store operations.
The CDAO role is new. The appointment was one of nine officer changes across technology, AI, store operations and real estate, including Tom Hutchins becoming SVP and CTO with expanded responsibilities.
Who he is: Nixon is a Big-Tech data scientist. He joined Dollar General as SVP of AI optimization after holding senior AI and data roles in the technology sector.
Why delivery matters: Dollar General operates more than 21,000 stores, 34 distribution centers, and a private tractor fleet. About 75% of the US population lives within five miles of a store. Same-day delivery now reaches about 18,000 stores and contributed about 70 basis points to Q1 comparable sales growth.
COO Emily Taylor said on the Q1 call that delivery is “a highly incremental business, and a profitable business for us today.” Routing that network through the AI function signals the retailer wants to engineer last-mile with its own data and AI, even though DoorDash and Uber Eats still handle the actual drop-offs.
The pattern to watch: Dollar General and Kroger both created first-time Chief Data and AI Officer roles this year. But only Dollar General placed fulfillment execution under that function. Walmart still separates AI platforms from supply chain operations. It is a small sample, but when a retailer puts physical fulfillment inside the data organization, it is betting that replenishment and delivery are increasingly problems solved through data.
