Nordstrom is looking at new carriers to help it deliver seven days a week. Kevin Breedlove, its director of customer delivery and returns, said the retailer is weighing “new entrant options who can help us achieve that at scale.”
“We think it’s good for our business as well that we can drive consistent speed as best we can seven days a week,” Breedlove told the Parcel Forum conference, Supply Chain Dive reported. “Late is always worse than early, but customers more and more are expecting precision with that promise, so that he or she can be there when the package arrives,” he added.
Parker Bushaw, a Nordstrom strategic sourcing manager, said a low rate on a three-day service is a bad deal when the goal is a two-day promise.
FedEx Home Delivery reaches 98% of the US population on Saturdays and nearly two-thirds on Sundays at no extra charge. OnTrac delivers seven days a week to more than 75% of its service area, with no weekend charge. Amazon Shipping also delivers seven days a week with no weekend delivery fees. Its residential ground rates run below FedEx and UPS.
Nordstrom already offers same-day delivery for beauty products in Los Angeles. Orders placed by 3 p.m. arrive by 9 p.m., said Farah Akoum, Nordstrom’s senior director of product management. The retailer plans to take same-day delivery to new markets nationwide this fall.
