UPS is investing $48 million in 27 temperature-controlled freight cross-dock facilities across the Americas, Europe and Asia. The network includes a mix of new builds and upgrades. The goal is to protect cold-chain shipments during the handoff between planes and trucks.
The investment targets the weakest point in the chain, not a bigger footprint. Most cold-chain failure happens when shipments change modes. UPS is adding capacity at that exact point as it leans harder into higher-margin healthcare logistics.
What it buys: The 27 sites are mostly near airports, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami and Toronto. Each can handle the full temperature spectrum: cold (2-8°C), controlled room temperature (15-25°C) and frozen shipments. All 27 carry IATA CEIV Pharma certification, the air cargo standard for handling pharmaceuticals. They feed a UPS Healthcare network with more than 19.2 million square feet of GDP and cGMP-compliant space.
Why the handoff: “Every time a shipment changes hands or modes, there’s potential for delays, temperature excursions and loss of visibility,” said Kiel Harkness, UPS’s VP of healthcare strategy, per FreightWaves. Cross-docks let freight move from plane to truck without breaking the cold chain. “We want a seamless and as quick as possible transition from aircraft to the next mode,” he told Supply Chain Dive.
The bigger bet: Healthcare is UPS’s main growth engine. The business generated $11 billion in revenue in 2025, up from $10.5 billion a year earlier.
CEO Carol Tomé has said it delivers double-digit operating margins. UPS built the unit through acquisitions, including Frigo-Trans and Andlauer Healthcare Group. It is also the higher-margin volume replacing the low-margin Amazon business UPS is deliberately shedding.
The pattern: UPS is not alone. Its investment is also the smallest among its major rivals. Others are spending far more on full facility rebuilds.
UPS’s $48 million buys 27 surgical fixes at the riskiest point in the cold chain, a bet that the handoff, not the footprint, is what needs fixing.
